Why boxers skip (and how to get good at it)

Skipping builds the footwork, rhythm and engine boxing needs. Kai's three-week plan.

A boxer skipping fast in a gym, the rope a blur

Every boxing class at Haymaker starts with the rope, and not just to warm you up. Skipping trains light feet, rhythm and the stamina to do it for three minutes at a time.

Week one

Ten rounds of thirty seconds, with thirty seconds of rest. Just basic bounces; tripping is part of it.

Week two

Six rounds of one minute. Add the boxer skip: shifting your weight from foot to foot.

Week three

Three rounds of three minutes, with a minute of rest. That’s a fight’s worth of footwork.
